Stove Repair in San Diego: what we actually see

The commonest cooktop complaint across the city is a burner that clicks and will not light, and in the older neighbourhoods the cause is more often moisture than a failed part. Kitchens in North Park, Golden Hill and Kensington are small, poorly ventilated by modern standards, and west of Interstate 5 the marine layer keeps everything slightly damp for most of the year. Water sitting in or around the spark electrode stops it firing, and a burner that stopped working the day after somebody cleaned the hob has almost always simply not dried out. A few hours, or a hairdryer on cool, resolves it without anybody being called.

Where it is genuinely a fault, the diagnosis narrows quickly by watching which igniters click. On most hobs all of them fire together when any knob is turned. If none click at all, the spark module or the switch is at fault. If they all click but one burner never lights while the others do, the problem is at that burner: a blocked port, a cap sitting proud, or an electrode that has drifted out of position. That single observation separates a cheap repair from a moderately expensive one, and it costs nothing to make before booking.

Older homes here bring a supply consideration too. A good deal of the pre-1960 stock still has its original gas run to the kitchen, and while the pipework is generally sound, the flexible connector behind the range is frequently far older than it should be. We look at it on every gas call. A connector past its service life is inexpensive to replace and is not something anybody should be relying on because it has not failed yet.

Flame quality is the last thing worth checking yourself, and it takes ten seconds. A healthy burner runs mostly blue with crisp edges. Yellow, lazy or sooty flames mean the air-to-gas mixture is wrong, which wastes gas, blackens pans and produces more carbon monoxide than it should. That is worth a call rather than living with, and it is usually an adjustment rather than a part.

On repair-or-replace, gas cooktops are one of the few appliances where repair almost always wins. There is very little in a gas hob to fail expensively: burners, caps, electrodes, a spark module and a set of valves, all of them individually cheap and most of them available for platforms twenty years old. Unless the appliance has physical damage or the valves themselves have seized, the arithmetic favours repair by a wide margin. We say so even on old machines, because an eighteen-year-old gas hob with a new spark module has years left in it.

The exception is a cracked glass surface on an electric or induction hob. That is not repairable at any sensible price — the glass is bonded to the element assembly and replacing it costs a substantial fraction of a new appliance.
